It’s a fact of nature that very few people are blessed with teeth and jaws that are perfectly aligned. Ideally, top teeth fit slightly over bottom teeth when the mouth is closed. This keeps chewing from wearing out the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which can be quite painful. Unfortunately, though, many of us have teeth and jaws that aren’t well-aligned. Thankfully, since the 1800s, those suffering from severe misalignments have been able to find relief with braces and other orthodontic hardware. Dr. Victor Pardi, DDS — your local Greenwich orthodontist — would like to tell you about “Invisalign” orthodontics, a relatively new method of correcting dental misalignments that’s a lot subtler and a lot more comfortable than conventional braces.

As you probably know, braces are a combination of wires and tiny brackets that are attached to the front of your teeth. They work by moving your teeth gradually. Each time you visit the orthodontist, the wires are tightened a little more, repositioning teeth almost imperceptibly. As far as results go, braces work great and represent a tried and true tool in orthodontists’ toolbox. But they aren’t without disadvantages. Braces can be uncomfortable to wear, difficult to keep clean and, to some, unsightly. Dr. Victor Pardi, DDS — your local Greenwich orthodontist — has another tool in his toolbox: invisalign. Invisalign works to straighten teeth via the same gradual pushing of braces, but because the system uses clear removable retainers instead of metal hardware, recipients of the treatment are able to avoid many of the drawbacks more traditional orthodontics. Not only are invisalign retainers basically invisible to people around you, they can also be popped in and out effortlessly, enabling you to thoroughly brush and floss your teeth. You will also remove your invisalign retainer when you eat, so no need to worry about avoiding certain kinds of hard or sticky foods.

It’s important to know that Invisalign isn’t right for everyone. Victor Pardi, DDS, will need to have a look at your teeth in order to gauge whether or not your orthodontic needs will best be addressed in this way. You won’t know until you come in for a checkup! Did you know that the most effective time to seek orthodontic treatment for your child is between the ages of 7-11 years old? Many parents think that orthodontic work is not necessary until all of the child’s permanent teeth have erupted, but in reality, you can save time and money by investing in interceptive orthodontic work provided by our Greenwich orthodontist, Dr. Victor Pardi. Interceptive orthodontics is a service that focuses on addressing potential orthodontic problems before they advance to a point where extensive treatment will be necessary. This means that scheduling an early intervention appointment for your child will allow Dr. Pardi to uncover any issues that present themselves, and recommend preventative treatments to address them.

Some of the work that falls under the category of interceptive orthodontics includes: arch expansion, which makes room for permanent teeth to grow in properly, where crowding could have been an issue without the treatment. Our Greenwich orthodontist also often suggests the use of orthopedic growth appliances, which enhances your child’s jaw growth, decreasing the likelihood of orthodontic problems later in life. At Dr. Pardi’s office, we like to consider interceptive orthodontics as phase one of a two-step process. Phase two occurs once most of the permanent teeth have come in, where we then evaluate if further work is necessary. Usually, using interceptive methods first greatly decreases the amount of work that is needed later. Phase two of the treatment process then tends to be much simpler, and therefore much less expensive for the parent.
